It was his first time there on the border of France and Germany. He was enthusiastic about it because he believed fighting for his nation was the ultimate source of pride. In fact, he believed that his true passion lay in the thrill of battle and chaos. A sense of pleasure lit up his face as he looked at himself in the mirror, his gaze fixed on his chest where his own name, Nicole Brown, was proudly displayed.
The world war was in its initial phases, but they had already defeated the German force. There was a sense of menace, although his force was going in celebration a bit far from his camp. The major of the camp approached him with a commanding presence, ready to take charge. “We’re heading out to celebrate—only for those who fought in the battle,” he said, his tone firm but not unkind. His eyes flicked down to the name on his chest. “But someone needs to stay back, and since you’re new here... Will you stay, Brown?”
Brown straightened up, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Yes, Major. That’s exactly what I was waiting for.”
“But if any emergency arises, use the walkie-talkie to signal us,” the Major said, furrowing his brows as he handed the device to Nicole with a firm grip.
The entire force had departed, leaving him alone. Lying on the ground, he began to hum a tune to himself, but his ears suddenly caught a sound coming from the trees nearby.
Without wasting a moment, he sprang to his feet, gripping the sawed-off rifle tightly. As soon as he spotted two soldiers in German uniforms, he dove behind a tree for cover. They opened fire, but his heart surged with excitement—this was his first real chance to shoot at a man, not just a target.
Brown fired at both of them but missed his mark. Without a second’s hesitation, the German soldiers returned fire. He thrust his rifle out from behind the tree, his finger tightening on the trigger—but the rifle clicked, empty.
As soon as the German soldiers realized the rifle was empty, they fired at Brown without a hint of hesitation. Sweat began to bead on his face, and veins bulged in his neck as the pressure mounted. He considered signaling his force with the walkie-talkie, but he didn’t want to squander his first real chance. Dropping to the ground, he crawled toward the camp, all while the bullets rained down on him. He shielded his face with his hand, panic creeping in, but he pressed forward. The tree, now his only cover, worked as a fragile shield against the onslaught.
Finally, he made it to the camp, unharmed. Breathing heavily, he grabbed a handful of bullets from the box and quickly reloaded his rifle. The German soldiers continued to fire, but suddenly, both their guns clicked—empty. They had forgotten to bring extra rounds. Seizing the moment, Brown took his shot, hitting one of the soldiers in the leg. In an instant, the other soldier bolted, abandoning his comrade to face the enemy alone.
Nicole Brown steeled his mind, determined to make the most of his first real opportunity. He reloaded his rifle and moved toward the German soldier, gripping it tightly. The soldier lying on the ground wept, muttering something in German. Brown stood tall, his figure looming in front of him, unwavering.
He gazed into the eyes of the German soldier, noticing the tears that stained his face. The soldier, still crying, muttered something in German, his gaze fixed on the jungle where his comrades had fled. Brown couldn’t understand the words, but he sensed the soldier was pleading for help, desperate to avoid death in that moment. Brown readied himself to take the shot, but as he looked at the soldier, he saw not an enemy—but a fellow man, a stranger in the same fight.
The soldier cried, his hands clasped together in a desperate plea for his life. In that moment, Brown felt a tear well up in his own eyes. He realized that life wasn’t something to be taken so easily for a fleeting moment of joy. With a heavy heart, he spared the soldier, extending a hand to help him to his feet, offering support for his injured leg, and allowing him to leave. When the rest of the force returned from the celebration, they searched the jungle and border area—but Nicole Brown was nowhere to be found.
